How to Calculate Race Pace

Simple formulas, sample 5K–marathon pace charts, and links back to the free tools on PaceBeacon.

The core formula

Pace = time ÷ distance. If you finish a 10K (6.21371 miles) in 50:00 (3,000 seconds), pace is 3,000 ÷ 6.21371 ≈ 483 seconds per mile → about 8:03 per mile. Use the interactive race pace calculator to skip the arithmetic.

Solve for finish time

Finish time = pace × distance. A 9:00/mi goal for a half marathon (13.1094 mi) is 9 × 60 × 13.1094 ≈ 7,079 seconds → about 1:57:59.
